According to multiple sources, after a winless start to the 2025 season, Sporting Kansas City has parted ways with longtime manager Peter Vermes. The decision comes just one day after The Cauldron, the club’s primary supporters group, publicly called for his resignation. In an open letter posted on social media, The Cauldron wrote, “We are at a breaking point — one that demands decisive action to protect the legacy, culture and future of our beloved club.”
Vermes, 58, had been at the helm since 2009, making him the longest-tenured coach in Major League Soccer and one of the longest-serving managers globally. During his 15-year reign, Vermes led SKC to an MLS Cup title in 2013 and three U.S. Open Cup trophies. His leadership helped shape the club’s modern identity, from its rebrand to Sporting KC to the development of its youth academy and world-class facilities.
However, a 13-match winless streak stretching back to last season, combined with a dismal 0-5-1 record in 2025, proved too much to overlook. The club announced the decision Monday, describing it as a mutual parting of ways.
“I am thankful to everyone, especially ownership, for giving me the opportunity to be a steward of this club for the past two decades,” Vermes said in a statement.
Assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin has been named interim manager as the club begins the search for Vermes’ successor — and for a spark to reignite their faltering season.
