USL Academy Talent on Full Display at the USL Pathway Classic

The USL recently kicked off its Pathway Classic in Tampa, home to the league’s national headquarters. There were a few academies on display that I hadn’t yet had the chance to watch in person, but with many of their players already earning minutes with senior teams, my expectations were high.

After arriving and watching my first match, my excitement for the days to come only grew. I focused primarily on the U20 division, which featured USL giants like Indy Eleven, Miami FC, New Mexico United, and the Richmond Kickers. The premier division also showcased teams such as Lexington SC, AC Connecticut, USL Boise, Wake FC, Inter Gainesville, and more.

Overall, the level of coaching and organization across the board was impressive. These academy teams played with a clear identity—building out of the back, putting the ball into space and attacking with purpose followed by clinical finishing. At the U20 level, many of these teams were already performing to a professional standard.

Lexington SC, in particular, were a joy to watch. Every player was technical, dynamic, and operated within a well-coached system. They were easily one of my favorite teams at the showcase. I was blown away by this club and the players they had.

Miami FC brought that signature South Florida flair, showcasing a promising core of young talent. That group will be a force in the coming years.

The most anticipated matchup was Indy Eleven vs. New Mexico United. Despite the final scoreline, New Mexico impressed throughout the tournament with their dynamic play and relentless energy. Still, Indy Eleven proved to be the most complete side, and it’s no surprise they walked away with the championship across every age group.

The USL continues to raise the bar in youth development. If there’s one critique, it’s that we’d love to see expanded age brackets—U18, U16, and U14—within the USL Academy league. That would create even more opportunities and excitement for tournaments like this.

This was another well-organized, high-quality event from the USL. We look forward to covering it again in the future. Be sure to check out our social media channels for exclusive player interviews from across the tournament [HERE]
