Fritz Volmar – The Long Game

Fritz Volmar’s path to success may appear rapid; yet beneath the surface lies a story of hard work, strong ethics, family values, and sacrifices. Before gaining acclaim as one of the nation’s best young defenders and earning the opportunity to represent the U.S. on the international youth stage, Volmar’s journey started in Peoria, Illinois.

Initially nurtured as a wingback, his remarkable talent led him to the historic Scott Gallagher Academy in St. Louis. There he would use his tryout to test his skills at one of the top academies in the nation. As fate would have it, Fritz Volmar was accepted at the Scott Gallagher Academy.

However, this achievement was only half the challenge. With his family living hours away, a major sacrifice was required – relocating to facilitate his place on the team. His mother welcomed the sacrifice for her son while his father shouldered the responsibilities at home.

As with many successful players, Volmar’s support system played a pivotal role in his journey. The profound impact his parents’ support had on him was evident during our conversation.

Soon after his time at one of St. Louis’ oldest academies, Fritz Volmar transitioned from the historic institution to the emerging MLS team—St. Louis City FC Academy—a realization of every kid’s dream.

Volmar’s exceptional reading of the game, technical prowess, athleticism, and lock-down defensive skills made him a remarkably versatile player. Luck would show its hand again. Filling in as center back during the absence of a regular player at practice was a move that would have long lasting implications. Within just a year, Volmar gained recognition, particularly during the prestigious Generation Adidas (“GA”) Cup, where, after only two days, the budding star drew attention from dozens of college scouts and garnered significant media interest.

In a matter of months, Fritz Volmar achieved remarkable milestones, securing a call-up to the U.S. Youth National team, earning an MLS Next All-Star appearance, and making history as the first academy player from St. Louis City SC to play for their second team.

Reaching a certain level in soccer often gives the illusion of an “overnight success,” but it comes after a lifetime of dedication. With newfound opportunities, the MLS Next All-Star defender opted for the college route, choosing to attend his parents’ alma mater. This decision, motivated by both soccer aspirations and a commitment to tradition, led him to one of the country’s premier educational institutions, Northwestern University.

The choice was further influenced by the chance to be coached by Russell Payne, making the decision even more compelling.

The Northwestern freshman starter is now poised to advance in his career, supported by a formidable team and coach. The hope is to see his team in the NCAA Tournament, marking the next chapter in his journey.

What becomes strikingly clear is that this path is not his alone; it intricately weaves with the support of Fritz Volmar’s parents, serving as both a part of his success and the driving force behind his ambition.

The deliberate choice to go D1 wasn’t arbitrary. Rather, it was a strategic plan to maximize his potential while taking the next step in his path to professional soccer. Fritz Volmar’s story unfolds as one of consistent, incremental improvements—a testament to enduring growth sustained over substantial periods of time.
