When you reach a certain level, there are numerous talented players at every position on the field, some of whom may check off all the necessary boxes. While some footballers exhibit big personalities on the pitch, maintaining that same charisma and energy when speaking publicly or in front of the camera can be challenging for many. However, every now and then, you encounter a player who shines brightly both on and off the field.
One such player is Ivory Covington. During the GA Cup, the world witnessed the U15 winger not only dominate against Manchester United but also display his vibrant personality as he celebrated with his teammates. Following the game, his confidence and professionalism were evident as he spoke to us about the tournament.
Further validating his performance, he received a call-up to the US Youth National Team camp in his hometown of Atlanta, where his soccer journey began. Energetic from a young age, his parents decided to enroll him in a sport that would allow him to channel that energy, and fate led him to fall in love with soccer immediately.
Early on, Coach Saxon Venair, a respected figure in Atlanta with Concord Fire, recognized and nurtured Ivory’s talent. This development caught the attention of the MLS academy Atlanta United when Ivory was just 10 years old.
Atlanta United is no stranger to youth talent. Over the last few years they have become known for exceptionalism at the academy level. Atlanta’s players seem to carry that standard and culture. When asked about soccer in Atlanta, Ivory emphasized the passion and unity within the team, describing it as a bond that can never be broken.
The youth national team prospect highlighted his work ethic as one of his greatest strengths, evident in his ability to press the defense and create scoring opportunities. He cited Mbappé as his inspiration, an influence clearly reflected in his playing style.
Like any other 15 year-old, Ivory is still growing as a player. At his age, focus can be the key factor to success. This seems to be a concept the winger prides himself in. He expressed a belief in hard work and benefiting from a strong support system within his family. Beyond soccer, his favorite pastimes include playing video games and spending time with his family.
For players on teams in the spotlight, such as this 2009 Atlanta United squad, having a strong support system is crucial because that spotlight does not seem to be going anywhere. With teammates like Amir Henry, Ignacio Suarez, Freddy Bond, and others, this group is poised to compete at every MLS event.
Ivory Covington indeed possesses both the talent and intangible qualities to excel both on and off the field, with his supreme confidence being paramount. Nurturing and encouraging that type of confidence in a player is crucial. Supported by his family and teammates, whom he describes as, “having an unbreakable bond”, Ivory seems to be in the perfect environment to achieve his goals.
