Leo Messi, considered by many as the greatest footballer of all time, has looked like just that in his first two matches with Inter Miami. After scoring 2 goals in only 22 minutes against Atlanta many are questioning the suitability of the MLS for the greatest player of the last two decades.
The contrast of his struggles in Ligue 1 to his immediate impact in Miami is creating fear amongst MLS supporters who believe this may cause critics to question the level of U.S. Soccer.
On the other hand, one could argue that Messi’s arrival has raised the bar, thereby elevating the overall quality of MLS matches. Along with resources that will help grow the league. It’s also true that teams will to some extent figure out ways to limit Messi’s dominance.
Messi’s move to the MLS is bigger than soccer. At this point in his career he no longer needs to prove himself. Every league in the world has something that it adds to the world soccer community. With the attention Messi brings to the the MLS people can finally see what we have to offer.
